As the country continues to battle against COVID-19, the Department of Education recently announced that it would reschedule the opening of classes this school year from June to August 2020. Based on a report of ABS-CBN, classes are scheduled to start on August 24, 2020, and end on April 30, 2021.
However, Education Secretary Leonor Briones clarified in a virtual press briefing that teachers and students are not required to go to schools once the classes start. With lockdowns implemented in some areas, DepEd is exploring and thinking about the possibilities of blended learning.
This means that the department will allow classroom learning to cities and municipalities that allow academic institutions to physically open. As for those places which are still under quarantine, the department will implement various approaches to teach students remotely with the use of technology. Apart from online learning, the use of media like television and radio, and other offline methods will be encouraged. The discretion to continue virtual classes even after the lockdown is also placed on the school administration.
DepEd’s regional units are responsible for determining which teaching model is appropriate and to follow. The decision will be solely based on the resources and current situation of the city and municipality.
