Nvidia to acquire Arm

Nvidia Corporation is reportedly in looking to acquire British chip designer ARM Ltd. from SoftBank Group Corp.

Arm Ltd., major chip designer of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers, including Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung, and Huawei, was purchased by SoftBank Group Corp. for USD 32 billion four years ago, according to Bloomberg. Now, SoftBank is looking to divest its position in Arm, and possibly sell its entire stake in the company.

Graphics chip manufacturer Nvidia has been interested in competing in the Central Processing Market in both the consumer and data centers, and Arm may be their ticket in. Should they continue with the acquisition, they may be competing with both Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, which are both customers of Arm as well. Because of this, the purchase may face interference from regulatory bodies.

While either company has released no additional details, Rosenblatt Securities analyst Hans Mosesmann estimates that Nvidia may pay around USD 55 billion for Arm.
