Alex Ovechkin will miss his second consecutive game Sunday as the Washington Capitals visit the New York Rangers to complete a home-and-home series, head coach Spencer Carbery announced.
Ovechkin, who is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, had a six-game point streak end when he was absent for Saturday’s 3-2 win in Washington.
The 38-year-old Ovechkin has a team-leading 27 points (eight goals and 19 assists) in 39 games this season.
On the other side of the ice, the Rangers got some good injury news as forward Kaapo Kakko will make his return from a lower-body injury on Sunday.
Kakko, 22, missed the Rangers’ last 21 games with the injury he sustained on Nov, 27 against the Buffalo Sabres. The former No. 2 overall pick has recorded two goals and one assist in 20 games this season.
The Capitals (20-14-6) are sixth in the Metropolitan Division with 46 points and return home to play the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday following their trip to New York.
Watch the Capitals face the Rangers live at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
