Patrick Roy was making sure everyone was aware who is in charge as he ran his first morning skate as head coach of the New York Islanders, according to reports.
Roy, who was hired by the team to replace Lane Lambert on Saturday, took to the ice on Sunday morning and stopped drills, made corrections, and loudly declared “we need to be good at this,” according to Newsday’s Andrew Gross.
Roy, 58, takes over a team that is 19-15-11 and whose 49 points has it sitting in sixth place in the Atlantic Division, but just two points back of a wild-card playoff spot.
Hiring Roy comes as the Islanders have lost four games in a row and six of seven. GM Lou Lamoriello said he made the move because he still believes his team can contend and earn a spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
