Report: Real Madrid targeting Davies for summer move

Real Madrid is eyeing Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies for a monumental summer move, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The Canadian’s contract with the Bundesliga side is set to expire in June 2025.

Davies has played in all but one of Bayern’s league games this season and started all six Champions League group-stage matches.

Davies, 23, is reportedly seen as the perfect fit for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, given his young age and soon-expiring contract.

However, sources told ESPN that Davies’ contract is essential to the deal’s outcome. Reportedly, Real Madrid will make a move for the Canadian international only if he chooses not to renew with the Bundesliga giants.

That said, for the deal to take place, Bayern Munich has to make Davies available for transfer rather than risk losing him for free next summer.

Looking ahead, Ancelotti, who just extended his contract with the La Liga table leaders through June 2026, wants to strengthen Madrid’s backline. Currently, Ancelotti rotates Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia in left-back. And as Mendy’s contract with Madrid runs until 2025, there could be space for Davies to enter the Spanish side very soon.

Davies’ impressive five years at Bayern Munich has demonstrated his versatility and caught the eye of many clubs. Being able to play up and down the flanks, as well as forwarding attack from the backline, is seen as an advantage.

However, the deal with Real isn’t set in stone. Sources told ESPN that Davies is happy at Bayern Munich and he’s grateful the team gave him a chance when it signed him from Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019.

Davies has made over 150 appearances for Bayern Munich and won 13 trophies with the club, including five Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020.
