The Pittsburgh Steelers are officially in the playoffs, but they will likely be without their best defensive player for at least two weeks.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, star linebacker T.J. Watt is dealing with a Grade 2 MCL sprain and the “best case scenario” for getting him back on the field will be in two weeks with a brace on his knee.
Watt suffered the injury when he was stepped on by his teammate, Montravius Adams, in the third quarter on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens and stayed down on the ground in apparent discomfort. He walked off under his own power and eventually went to the locker room.
He is expected to miss Sunday’s wild-card clash with the host Buffalo Bills, so the Steelers will need to win at least one game to get him back on the field.
The loss of Watt is a huge blow to the Pittsburgh defence as the 29-year-old pass rusher led the NFL with 19 sacks this season. It’s the third time in his career that he has led the league in sacks.
The Steelers landed in the seventh and final playoff spot in the AFC, clinching a berth Sunday when Jacksonville lost to Tennessee.
