Nick Dunlap, PGA Tour’s first amateur winner in 33 years, turns pro

Nick Dunlap, who became the PGA Tour’s first amateur winner in 33 years, turned pro and accepted membership to join the PGA Tour on Thursday.

Dunlap, who is a sophomore at the University of Alabama, becomes the youngest member on tour at 20 years old.

Dunlap was victorious at The American Express this past Sunday to become the tour’s first amateur winner since Phil Mickelson at the Tucson Open in 1991.

Playing in just his fourth tour event, Dunlap became the seventh amateur winner since 1945 — and the third since 1957.

“Nothing like I’ve ever felt,” Dunlap said. “It was so cool to be out here and experience this as an amateur. Whether I had made that or missed that (last putt), if you would have told me (on) Wednesday night I would have a putt to win this golf tournament, I wouldn’t believe you.”

Dunlap had to forfeit the $1.5 million prize due to his amateur status.

The Huntsville, Alabama, native is also the first reigning U.S. amateur champion to win on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods in 1996.

He will make his first start as a member of the tour during next week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
