Earlier this month, it was announced that this year’s Beijing Motor Show would be postponed in light of the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Now, the epidemic has caused the cancellation of yet another upcoming motor show, this time on the other side of the globe.
The 2020 Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS)—which was scheduled to take place on March 5-15, 2020—has now been canceled following the Swiss Federal Council ban on “large-scale events involving more than 1,000 people.”
“The Federal Council’s top priority is to protect the population. It is responding to the latest developments in the coronavirus epidemic and has categorized the situation in Switzerland as ‘special’ in terms of the Epidemics Act,” the official statement released today, February 28, reads. “This enables the Federal Council, in consultation with the cantons, to order measures that are normally the responsibility of the cantons.
“The Federal Council is banning public and private events in Switzerland at which more than 1,000 people would gather. This ban on events comes into immediate effect and will apply at least until March 15.”
This is indeed unfortunate as quite a few vehicles were set to debut at this year’s show. There’s the new Hyundai i20 and i30, the all-new Kia Sorento, the second-gen Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, and the all-new Volkswagen Golf GTI, just to name a few. But safety is the top priority, of course.
