We'll be seeing a new mild-hybrid Geely crossover in PH this year

Geely made quite some noise last year when it re-entered the Philippine market under Sojitz G Auto Philippines Corporation (SGAP). A lot of credit for that, of course, goes to the carmaker’s promising little crossover, the Coolray.

In 2020, Geely plans to expand its local lineup further. The next model it wil launch? A mild-hybrid electric vehicle.

We don’t have a lot of details yet—what the name of the model is, or when exactly it will be launched—but we do have some info on the vehicle’s mild-hybrid setup. A 1.5-liter turbopetrol engine represents the internal combustion part of the hybrid equation, while the electric part comprises a 48V belt-starter generator integrated in the engine’s front-end accessory drive, a 48V-12V DCDC converter, a 48V lithium-ion battery module, and a battery management system, all governed by a hybrid module control system. There’s no word on combined output yet as of this writing.

The mild-hybrid system charges up the battery through regenerative braking, meaning kinetic energy is recycled and stored in the batteries during deceleration. The vehicle also comes with an Intelligent Start & Stop feature and ‘Smart Sailing,’ which turns off the engine when coasting and propels the vehicle using electric drive instead, provided there’s sufficient energy stored in the battery.

“Hybrid and electric vehicle technology is becoming increasingly popular in the auto industry. This is where the future is heading to,” said SGAP president and CEO Mikihisa Takayama, adding that “2020 is definitely going to be a landmark year for Geely in the Philippine automotive market as it steps up its game, with the introduction of the MHEV.”

Will you be anticipating this launch? If so, then watch this space—we’ll keep you posted.
