Xbox Series X specs and features revealed

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has detailed the specs and features of their upcoming console, the Xbox Series X.

According to the post, the Xbox Series X will come with custom-designed AMD Zen 2 CPU, which is the same architecture of AMD’s current 3000-series Ryzen chips. As for the GPU, Microsoft will be using the RDNA 2 architecture from AMD, capable of delivering up to 12 TFLOPS of performance, which is twice as powerful as the Xbox One X. In terms of desktop hardware, the RDNA 2 based GPU on the Series X would sit in between an NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super (11.15 TFLOPS) and the RTX 2080ti (13.45 TFLOPS). For storage, the Xbox Series X will come with (presumably) a PCIe Gen 4 SSD for faster load times.

With all the upgraded hardware comes more features, such as:

  • Variable Rate Shading – allows developers to prioritize individual effects instead of rendering all the pixels on the screen
  • Hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing – leverages the hardware to perform raytracing tasks to provide more realistic lighting, reflections, and acoustics
  • Quick Resume – allows users to continue multiple games from a suspended state without long loading screens
  • Dynamic Latency Input – leverages high bandwidth and Microsoft’s proprietary wireless communication protocol to reduce input lag from the controller
  • 120 fps support – developers may now exceed the 60fps cap of previous generation consoles.

The Xbox Series X will also come with an HDMI 2.1 port to accommodate the features that the hardware can deliver. As for compatibility, the Xbox Series X is compatible with four generations – all the way up to the original Xbox.
