Samsung Electronics has announced that it has begun mass producing the industry first’s 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM for next-generation premium smartphones.
While the current highest LPDDR5 RAM configuration is 12GB, Samsung notes that the additional memory will enable enhanced 5G and AI features. Smartphones will be able to support dynamic and responsive gameplay in ultra-high-resolution gaming and smart photography.
The new 16GB LPDDR5 consists of eight 12Gb chips and four 8Gb chips and is capable of transferring data at the rate of 5,500 Mb/s. It’s 1.3 times faster than the previous generation LPDDR4X while being 20% more power-efficient.
Alongside the mass production of the 16GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, Samsung is also looking to mass-produce the 16Gb LPDDR5 products based on the 10nm-class (1z) manufacturing process. This new generation of chips will be capable of data transfer rates of up to 6,400 Mb/s.
“With the introduction of a new product lineup based on our next-generation process technology later this year, Samsung will be able to fully address future memory demands from global customers,” said Cheol Choi, Samsung senior vice president of memory sales & marketing.
