We got our glimpse of the ‘future’ of the Subaru WRX STI when the Japanese carmaker first revealed its VIZIV Performance Concept at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show. Now, we finally have an idea of just how powerful the next-generation beast will be.
According to a Forbes report, once the all-new WRX STI finally breaks cover, it is expected to be powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine that’s capable of a whopping 400hp and 489Nm of torque. For comparison, the current WRX STI in Subaru’s Philippine lineup has a 2.5-liter turbo boxer that generates 296hp and 407Nm. Talk about an upgrade.
That new FA24 engine is the same motor propelling the current Ascent—or the Evoltis, as it will be called here in the Philippines—but in the said SUV, it produces a maximum of just 260hp. A power bump to 400hp on the next-gen WRX STI will come as a result of the engine’s crankshaft and pistons being reinforced and its timing balance being optimized. It will have fine-tuned valves and intake ports, too, as well as improved boost pressure. Braking capacity will also be enhanced to match the added grunt.
We don’t know yet what transmission this engine will be mated to— we sure hope there’s a manual gearbox available—but we’re expecting the new model to handle just as well as its predecessor does, since the report claims it’ll still have Subaru’s signature all-wheel drive. As for the styling, Forbes says it’ll look pretty similar to the concept car you see above.
