SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation recently introduced the face-lifted X1 and the all-new 1-Series during the BMW Joyfest this weekend. In case you missed that launch, you can read about the two new models here.
There are a few exterior changes to the X1. Its face, for example, is now highlighted by a stronger and wider grille, flanked by a pair of sporty headlamps. In addition, the crossover now sits on new 18-inch alloys.
Inside, some subtle yet likable changes have been made, like the new contrast stitching around the cabin. The seats sport new leather upholstery and there are also additional pearl chrome inserts up front. There’s still no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto available here, though, which some people might find disappointing. Under the hood, the updated X1 is powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel engine that generates 150hp and 350Nm. This is mated to an eight-speed automatic Steptronic transmission.
You may recall that the most notable update to the X1 was the mild-hybrid option that was to be added to the lineup in other markets. But as it stands, only one X1 option is available here and it carries a price tag of P3,090,000.
Now, on to the all-new 1-Series.
What’ll strike you first with the new-look 1-Series is its face, now highlighted by a redesigned bumper with air intakes that now stretch from one end to the other. The headlamps are slightly thinner, and the kidney grille now looks similar to the new BMW models. The wheels have been tweaked a bit, but they still look fairly similar to that of the previous generation’s.
The new 1-Series is only available as a five-door hatch, but its rear now looks much sportier than ever, with aggressive taillights paired with the macho tailgate. The plate has been removed from the bumper and is now mounted on said tailgate, too.
Inside, a plethora of soft-touch materials has been fitted along with ‘Illuminated Berlin’ trim finishers—still as premium as you would expect from a BMW. But similar to the X1, the 1-Series still doesn’t get an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. The plus side here is that this cabin is much bigger than before, now with more elbow room and knee room for both front and rear passengers. Trunk width has also been increased by 67mm, and overall capacity is now at 380L—1,200L with the rear seats folded down.
Powering the new 1-Series is a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder petrol engine capable of 140hp and 220Nm mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch Steptronic transmission. If that isn’t enough for you, though, you can opt for the M135i xDrive package which comes with a 2.0-liter powertrain that puts out 306hp and 450Nm. This beefed-up Bimmer can do 0-100kph in 4.8 sec (4.7 with the complete M Performance setup) and has a top speed of 250kph.
As far as SRPs go, the 2020 BMW 1-Series is priced at P2,690,000 and the M135i at P4,690,000. A purchase of any of these vehicles—including the face-lifted 2020 BMW X1—now comes with a 5-year/200,000km warranty, courtesy of the new BMW Extended Warranty Program.
