The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently proposed the conversion of several establishments in Metro Manila into additional healthcare facilities to be used in the fight against COVID-19. Now, the agency has announced that these plans will soon materialize.
The DPWH will be working with both government institutions and private entities to convert the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), World Trade Center (WTC), and the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex (RMSC) into usable facilities for both isolation and treatment of COVID-19 patients. According to its most recent announcement, it will inspect the three sites together with officials from the Department of Health and the Philippine General Hospital, as well as the private corporations that will be aiding the DPWH in this initiative.

PICC Forum Halls 1 to 3 will help accommodate about 630 patients across a usable area stretching to 4,000sqm. The agency says that it will work with private construction firm EEI Corporation in the redesigning of PICC and that work can be completed within two weeks.
The Ayala Development Corporation and Makati Development Corporation will work on the conversion of WTC, while the Razon Group will handle the works on the Ninoy Aquino Basketball Stadium inside RMSC. The DPWH clarified that there will be accredited construction workers who will be assigned to work on the three identified facilities.
These converted facilities will surely go a long way in helping our healthcare workers battle this pandemic. We’ve already said this over and over, but we’ll say it again anyway: our frontliners need all the help they can get at the moment.
