Genesis promised us a full reveal of the next-generation G80 within the month, and now we have it. Ladies and gentlemen, this is your first real look at all-new Genesis G80.
In case you missed it, Genesis already gave us a sneak preview of its midsize luxury sedan several weeks back. Now, seeing it out of the shadows in all its glory, we can say that it’s as premium as advertised.
“The core of our brand lies within the G80,” said William Lee, executive vice president and global head of the Genesis Brand. “This segment represents where we started and we’re pleased that our newest offering achieves a perfect balance of discerning luxury and inspiring performance for our customers.”
As expected, the G80 sports the new Genesis design language, with double-lined quad-headlamps flanking a massive crest grille up front. This design flows smoothly on to the side and the rear, where you’ll find similarly styled taillights. If you take out the crest grille-shaped twin exhaust pipes, we reckon its rear looks like a less macho yet more elegant version of the all-new Hyundai Elantra.
The carmaker also says that the new G80 is lighter than ever—by 125kgs, to be exact. It says that 19% of the G80’s body is composed of aluminum, which helps achieve that lightweight build. Those new massive 20-inch wheels might suggest otherwise, but we digress.
Now, moving on to the inside. As mentioned before, there’s a 14.5-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity mounted front and center on the dash. This is paired with a Genesis Integrated Controller, where drivers can simply write destinations or phone numbers instead of using the standard keyboard input. In addition, there’s also a 12.3-inch information cluster in front of the driver.
Genesis still hasn’t shown much of the interior, though. That said, the photo here does show a leather-clad cabin with a stylish colorway, so you can still expect that it’s as luxurious an interior as you would expect from the brand.
Thankfully, Genesis didn’t leave out the more important details like the powertrain options. The G80 will be offered with the following: a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that generates 300hp and 422Nm, a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 capable of 375hp and 530Nm, and a 2.2-liter inline-four diesel engine that produces 207hp and 441Nm. No word yet on what markets will get which powertrain, though.
As for safety and driver-assist tech, there’s also a lot going on in that department. Worth noting here is that the G80 is the first Genesis vehicle that will apply the company’s smart cruise control with machine-learning technology. To add to that, it also comes equipped with forward-collision and blind-spot collision avoidance assist, highway driving assist, pre-active safety seat, and remote smart parking assist features, among others.
So, what’s your take on the all-new Genesis G80? Like the new design? Tell us what you think in the comments.
